Don't waste your money on standard disposable batteries as rechargeable ones these days are very affordable and long lasting which could save you hundreds of dollars on standard ones. If you're a photo freak, be sure that you have enough memory to take plenty of shots without worrying about storage. Storage space is much larger now than it used to be but the megapixels have risen as well so aim for as much memory as you can afford, it will be worth it but consider 1GB as a minimum.
Unless you intend to use your camera for serious photography there isn't any need for a bulky very high specification version. There is no longer any need (even for keen amateur photographers) to carry around large, heavy models if you don't have to. By using this information you shouldn't go to far wrong when you go to buy your camera. Digital cameras are here to stay but expect even greater advancements in the future
