What causes apple to start browning when they make contact with air?

Basically, when you skin an apple, why does it turn brown? I know that this only happens when it mixes with air, but why air?

      google the word ‘oxidation’

      It has to do with oxygen reacting chemically with the apple.

      The process is called oxidation, for obvious reasons.
